Tenebrae = latin for darknessor shadows

Tenebrae = in the medieval church Tenebrae was the night and early morning services celebrated by monks on the last three days of Holy Week, commemorating the Crucifixtion.

The Tenebrae service in the Episcopal Church features a series of chants from Lamentations psalm, during which the fifteen candles are gradually extinguished and the choir and organ are are reduced until the last, single candle, considered the Lord is hidden, when the church is dark and silent, showing the apparent victory of death; a loud noise signifies the earthquake at the time of the rending of the Temple veil and the candle of the Lord shows again. We depart in silence.
